Dear friend´s. I live in Brazil and I was far from the Mad List for 8 years (I was on the www.idea2000.org). Now I´m finally back to the internet world and can tell you what´s up in the diabetic sport life in South America. We have a discussion list called Diabetes&Desportes (www.diabetesedesportes.com.br) and have more than 50 sporters in different places on Brazil (some from other country too), including a Death Valley ultramarathon finisher for 3 times, Monica Otero.

Alpinism with diabetes

I've been an insulin dependant diabetic since I was 8 (almost 16 years) and have been alpine and winter climbing climbing for over 4 years. I have thus far had quite a bit of success - highlights include: Piz Badile North East Face, Cordier Pillar, Dru North Face, Walker Spur, Gervasutti Pillar, Droites North East Spur Direct and Frendo Spur. I thought I'd write a short piece on how I deal with my diabetes in the mountains. I hope this will be of use to other diabetic Alpinists and I would be keen to hear anyone’s thoughts on it as I have had little contact with other diabetic Alpinists.

Type 1 Will Cross on Makalu

According to everestnews.com, Will Cross is expected to be on Makalu this season:
"...At 8,481m (27,824ft) Makalu ranks as the fifth highest mountain in the world. Will Cross departs for this monumental peak as part of his Giant Mountain Challenge; a quest to climb six of the highest peaks in the world. All are located in the Himalaya and all are above 8000m (26,246 ft). The purpose of this challenge is to demonstrate that one can lead an extraordinary life with diabetes, an incurable condition and a global pandemic.

Training: One month on...

So, one month after laying out a prospectus of what I expect of myself over the next few months, I feel that things, thus far, are going reasonably well... That is, when I get the chance to climb...

Once back my friend will fly back to france and I will stay until end of May. I did not plan anything else so far, it will depend on how I will manage with the Pachermo.
you can contact me on eberger.ch(at)gmail.com
Cheers!

Frustration!

OK, so I just wrote a huge blog article about Bouldering, tonight's Jimmy Marshall Lecture at the Fort William Mountain Festival and my philosophical thinkings on climbing and mountaineering after getting back from a day that has psyched me up beyond belief, but I stupidly somehow pressed 'back' on my web browser and lost the whole flipping thing! Gutted!

Another Type 1 summit on Cho Oyu

Geri Winkler along with others from Alpine Ascents reached the summit of Cho Oyu yesterday.   Looks like Geri succeeded in doing it without supplemental O2.
